Celebration of Nowruz

Today, I want to extend my very best wishes to all who are celebrating Nowruz around the world. This holiday is both an ancient ritual and a moment of renewal, and I hope that you enjoy this special time of year with friends and family.

In particular, I would like to speak directly to the people and leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Nowruz is just one part of your great and celebrated culture. Over many centuries, your art, music, literature and innovation have made the world a better and more beautiful place. Here in the United States, our own communities have been enhanced by the contributions of Iranian-Americans. We know that you are a great civilization, and your accomplishments have earned the respect of the United States and the world.

For nearly three decades, relations between our nations have been strained. But at this holiday, we are reminded of the common humanity that binds us together. Indeed, you will be celebrating your New Year in much the same way that we Americans mark our holidays – by gathering with family and friends, exchanging gifts and stories, and looking to the future with a renewed sense of hope.

Within these celebrations lies the promise of a new day – the promise of opportunity for our children; security for our families; progress for our communities; and peace between nations. Those are shared hopes. Those are common dreams.

So in this season of new beginnings, I would like to speak clearly to Iran’s leaders.

We have serious differences that have grown over time. My Administration is now committed to diplomacy that addresses the full range of issues before us, and to pursuing constructive ties among the United States, Iran, and the international community. This process will not be advanced by threats. We seek, instead, engagement that is honest and grounded in mutual respect.

You, too, have a choice. The United States wants the Islamic Republic of Iran to take its rightful place in the community of nations. You have that right – but it comes with real responsibilities. And that place cannot be reached through terror or arms, but rather through peaceful actions that demonstrate the true greatness of the Iranian people and civilization – and the measure of that greatness is not the capacity to destroy, it is your demonstrated ability to build and create.

So on the occasion of your New Year, I want you, the people and leaders of Iran, to understand the future that we seek. It is a future with renewed exchanges among our people, and greater opportunities for partnership and commerce. It is a future where the old divisions are overcome – where you, and all of your neighbors and the wider world can live in greater peace and security.

I know that this won’t be reached easily. There are those who will insist that we be defined by our differences. But let us remember the words that were written by the poet Saadi (SAH-dee)  so many years ago: “The children of Adam are limbs to each other, having been created of one essence.”

With the coming of a new season, we are reminded of this precious humanity that we all share. And we can once again call upon this spirit as we seek the promise of a new beginning.

از غیبت نسبتا طولانی خود در ارائه مطالب پوزش می طلبم و امیدوارم بتوانم از هم اکنون که فعالیت مجدد خود را آغاز نمودم جبران این کوتاهی را بنمایم.

مترجمي با قريحه ي مدرن

نجف دريابندري را، اغلب، به عنوان مترجمي با قريحه مي‌شناسند، مترجمي که ترجمه‌هايش به‌يک حوزه ادبي يا انديشگي معين محدود نمي‌شود. ترجمه‌هاي او در واقع نوع انتخاب او نسبت به آثاري که تاکنون به فارسي برگردانده است به مقدار فراوان، وسعت دايرة جهان بيني و ژرفاي طبع خاص او را نشان مي‌دهد. او در طول نزديک به نيم قرن فعاليت ادبي هم فلسفه و متون نظري و پژوهشي ترجمه کرده است، هم داستان و رمان و هم نمايش‌نامه و شعر، البته در تاليف و تحقيق و نقد ادبي هم دستي داشته است. او در پيشاني اغلب ترجمه‌هايش مقدمه‌هاي مفصل و مبسوطي در شرح و تحليل آراي مؤلفي که اثر او را ترجمه کرده نوشته است، و در اين مقدمه‌ها خواننده، اغلب، با تصوير و گيرايي از متن و ديدگاه نويسنده مواجه مي‌شود؛ مثل آن‌چه او به عنوان مقدمه بر «پيرمرد و دريا»ي همينگوي و «هکلبري فين» مارک تواين و «رگتايم» دکتروف و «فلسفه روشن انديشي» کاسيرر نوشته است. همين‌جا اين را هم بايد اشاره کنم انتخاب درست و ممتاز او نسبت به آثاري که تاکنون ترجمه کرده است، در حقيقت، در حکم دريچه‌هايي است، ولو اندک، به دنياي پهناور و ناشناخته ادب و فرهنگ جهاني که کمابيش امکان تماس و آشنايي خواننده فارسي زبان را با جلوه‌ها و نمونه‌هاي آن فراهم مي‌کند.       

به گمان من ترجمه‌هاي او از آثار فاکنر (يک گل سرخ براي اميلي و گوربه گور) و همينگوي (وداع با اسلحه و پيرمرد و دريا) و دکترف (رگتايم و بيلي باتگيت) و مارک تواين (هکلبري فين) و جبران خليل جبران (پيامبر و ديوانه) و ايشي گورو (بازمانده روز) ـ اگر چه ترجمه‌هاي ديگري نيز از پاره‌اي از اين آثار به فارسي به وجود دارد ـ جزو معتبرترين و درخشان‌ترين آثاري هستند که در فضاي گسترده و بي‌دروپيکر ترجمة ما وجود دارند. در حقيقت يکي از امتيازهاي ترجمه‌هاي او اين است که ما را با چهرة اصيل اين نويسندگان آشنا مي‌سازد؛ اگرچه فضل تقدم از حيث آشنا کردن ما با فاکنر و همينگوي و کمابيش، مارک تواين با ابراهيم گلستان است.  

دريابندري جزو معدود مترجمان ايراني است که علاوه بر وسواس و سخت‌گيري در انتخاب مهم‌ترين و خواندني ترين متون براي ترجمه، جهت‌گيري‌هايش همواره متوجه هنر اصيل و آثار «پيشتاز» بوده است و کارنامة فرهنگي‌اش نشان مي‌دهد که او پيوسته جانب ادب و ظرافت و زيبايي را گرفته است؛ زيرا او مدافع اصالت و ابداع يا نوعي «قريحه مدرن» است.                

اين‌طور به‌نظر مي‌رسد که مسئلة مهم براي او در ترجمه، به‌ويژه در ترجمه ادبيات داستاني، انتخاب يا يافتن زبان درست داستان، بيش از همه صداي راوي، است؛ يعني آن‌چه ساختار روايي داستان بر آن متکي است. در اين ميان آن‌چه اهميت دارد برقراري نوعي ثبات يا تعادل در زبان داستان، يا صداي راوي، است؛ به‌اين معني که در کاربرد سبک يا لحن راوي هيچ‌گونه افراط يا اغراقي صورت نگيرد. از همين رو است که سبک ترجمه‌هاي او در آثار داستاني يک‌سان نيست؛ به‌طوري که زبان زنده و شوخ و شنگ راوي «هکلبري فين» يا زبان مقمپز و کليشه‌وار راوي «بازمانده روز» هيچ شباهتي به يک‌ديگر ندارند.                  

اين را هم در خاتمه بگويم که من ترجمه‌هاي دريابندري و مقدمه‌هايي را که او بر اغلب اين ترجمه‌ها نوشته است بر داوري‌هايش دربارة ادبيات معاصر خودمان، به ويژه دربارة آثار هدايت و چوبک، ترجيح مي‌دهم. من معيارهاي زيبايي شناختي او را در ارزيابي ادبيات معاصر ايران قدري محدود و گاه محافظه کارانه مي‌دانم؛ اگر چه داوري‌هايش هيچ شباهتي به نقدهاي عوام فريبانه جنجالي و نوخاستگان کوچک مغز و پرمدعا ندارند. البته او در نقد نويسي متفنن است، يعني درواقع نمي‌توان او را منتقد پي‌گير و حرفه‌اي به‌حساب آورد. دريابندري به‌راستي مترجم است و من با وجدان راحت مي‌توانم اعلام کنم که کمتر مترجمي را مي‌شناسم که در روشني و سرراستي و سادگي نثر و در عين حال دقت و استواري کلام به پايش برسد.
